Art in the Community

My classroom isn't the only way your child can get connected into the art world. We are fortunate enough that our Appalachian community is home to countless art museums, workshops, and immersive experiences. If you are looking for things to do with your family or you are helping your child learn from home, take a look at the list bellow.

Located in downtown Boone, North Carolina, this local museum hosts both temporary and permanent exhibits, art talks, in-person and virtual workshops for all ages. It's admission is free! The museum also has the Rosen Sculpture Exhibition, a juried sculpture competition. With ten sculptures installed around Appalachian State's campus.

This museum is located in downtown Blowing Rock. It hosts changing exhibits and hands-on workshops for adults and youth in a variety of media taught by a diversity of instructors. They also have summer camps and beautiful galleries. It is well worth the visit.

Boone is home to the wonderful art supply store, Cheap Joes. If you or your child is looking for high quality materials, this is the store I suggest. They also have art workshops.

Located in North Carolina's Blue Ridge Mountains, Penland School of Craft is an international craft education center dedicated to the creative life. They offer workshops, residencies, a community gallery, and outreach programs. They also have interactive summer camps for kids and a community open house. With this event, each studio is open to visitors, with free, quality, hands-on studio experiences.

The Watauga Arts Council seeks to bring Art to the forefront of the High Country through advocacy, education, engagement, support, and inspiration. They are dedicated to enriching the lives of residents and visitors alike. If you are looking for a place to volunteer, take or teach art classes, this organization will make it possible. They also have a community art space that is available for use.

If you or your child is interested in ceramics, this town is for you! Seagrove is home to the largest concentration of working pottery studios. The artists encourage you to visit their studios and stores on self guided tours around town.
